TD has recently introduced some of the latest technological innovations they have been developing. While several of these features are still in the testing phase, others have already been launched for use by customers and staff. Having had the opportunity to experience some of these tools and learn about their motivations for development, I am genuinely impressed by TD’s commitment to integrating technology into its strategic vision.
Welcoming the Metaverse
Although I didn’t personally explore the VR tools on display (I suppose I’m too seasoned for that), TD showcased a metaverse designed to immerse their interns in the bank’s culture through a virtual reality experience. Currently in a pilot phase, this initiative aims to offer a digital environment for interns to connect with each other and bank employees. It also includes live discussions with leaders, panel events, innovation challenges, and informal learning opportunities over lunch.
To an outside observer, this might appear to be a mere novelty, but the TD metaverse has been thoughtfully designed. Younger generations tend to have shorter attention spans and crave innovative approaches. The metaverse serves to highlight what TD has to offer and encourage interns to engage more deeply with the organization. This is certainly a more engaging experience compared to conventional onboarding meetings.
Creating Inclusive Digital Products
The concept of accessibility is often associated with physical spaces, where we see improvements like signage and ramps. However, what about individuals with visual impairments? During the pandemic, when many branches temporarily closed, those with low vision had to rely on online and phone banking services, but many financial institutions were not adequately prepared for this often-overlooked group.
To address this gap, TD appointed Brian Moore as Senior Digital Accessibility Specialist to enhance inclusivity. Being blind himself, Moore ensures that accessibility is a core consideration during the development of new products.
Additionally, TD has crafted accessible digital tools for its workforce. One notable feature assists employees with Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) to concentrate better. This tool is uniquely associated with the employee’s profile upon login, eliminating the need for them to disclose their needs to a manager. Such resources are readily available for them.
From subtitles to voice commands, accessibility tools are increasingly common. TD has made significant advancements to improve the banking journey for both customers and staff alike.
Empowering Black Tech Talent
Despite many tech firms recently announcing substantial layoffs, there remains a strong demand for diverse talent in the tech sector. Acknowledging the challenges of attracting top talent, TD has established the Obsidi Academy, an intensive full-stack engineering program targeting Black-identified individuals. This three-month boot camp is designed to provide essential training, mentorship, and a pathway into the tech and banking sectors.
From TD’s perspective, this program functions as an apprenticeship. With plans to hire many new tech specialists in the upcoming years, the Obsidi Academy continually produces graduates familiar with TD’s culture. It’s also noteworthy that TD was a founding sponsor of the Black Professionals in Tech Network (BPTN).
Innovative Progress
So, where do TD’s innovative ideas originate? In a conversation with Imran Khan, the Head of Global Innovation & Digital Experience, I learned that numerous concepts stem from within the organization. TD has implemented a system that allows employees to propose specific features or tools they need to enhance their workflow, which is crucial as the tech team often lacks the direct daily engagement with colleagues that can inspire new ideas.
Interestingly, Khan shared that sometimes a requested enhancement can be a simple task, capable of completion in under two weeks. However, larger initiatives may extend over several years. Ultimately, TD aims to leverage technology more effectively for the benefit of both its customers and employees.
