Scene+ has evolved dramatically since its inception as a program offering complimentary movies and popcorn at Cineplex. Today, it stands as a comprehensive rewards network that encompasses various sectors, including groceries, fuel, travel, dining, home improvement, and beyond. Within just a few years, it has transitioned from a specialized entertainment initiative to a formidable player in the landscape of Canadian loyalty programs.
From modest origins to a coalition powerhouse
Initially launched in 2007, SCENE emerged as Cineplex’s loyalty initiative, providing substantial benefits right from the start, such as free movie admissions, upgrades to premium formats like 3D, and discounts on snacks.
After Scotiabank invested in the program, SCENE amalgamated with Scotia Rewards, giving rise to Scene+. At first, this alliance seemed unconventional; however, clarity came when Empire Company Limited—parent of grocery chains like Sobeys, FreshCo, IGA, Foodland, and Safeway—joined forces, indicating Scene+ was maturing into a significant loyalty coalition.
Since that pivotal moment, Scene+ has consistently broadened its network of partners, introducing more venues for earning and redeeming points. This expansion now includes establishments like Home Hardware, The Rec Room, Harvey’s, and Swiss Chalet. While not every partner has a national reach, increasing the number of collaborators is beneficial.
Scene+ members can also accumulate points by booking accommodations and car rentals through Scene+ Travel, powered by Expedia, thus enhancing the ways to earn rewards.
Shell became the latest addition to Scene+ earlier this year in Alberta, with a broader launch scheduled for May 26. This addition is a significant milestone for Scene+, providing a national gas partner. For motorists, this presents an opportunity to combine rewards and achieve substantial savings at the pump.
By linking a qualifying Tangerine or Scotiabank credit card to your Shell Go+ account, you can instantly enjoy a discount of 3 cents per litre when paying at Shell gas stations. If you opt for Shell V-Power, you’ll receive an added benefit of 4 cents off per litre. Plus, you’ll earn 3 cents per litre in Scene+ points on your Shell V-Power purchases, summing up to a potential total of 10 cents off per litre.
Additionally, CAA members can take advantage of another 3-cent discount per litre, which could potentially total 13 cents off when filling up at Shell—an impressive value.
Enhancing their credit card offerings
For many points enthusiasts, it’s noteworthy that Scotiabank provides some of the most underrated credit card options available in Canada.
One highlight is the Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite Card, which is unique among major Canadian bank credit cards for not imposing foreign transaction fees—a common 2.5% charge on purchases made in currencies other than Canadian dollars.
When the card was introduced, it was anticipated that other major banks would introduce similar no-FX products, but this never came to fruition. While points collectors may overlook the Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite due to its relatively modest earn rate, it often comes with a waived first-year annual fee and a lower minimum spending requirement to access the welcome bonus.
The Scotiabank Gold American Express card is another strong performer, awarding 6 Scene+ points for every dollar spent at Empire grocery stores, 5 points at other grocery stores, dining, and entertainment, 3 points on gas, transportation, and streaming services, and 1 point on all other purchases.
Though some churners consider it a weaker alternative to the Amex Cobalt, it features a significantly lower minimum spend for its welcome bonus and lacks Amex’s lifetime limit on sign-up bonuses.
Opportunities for enhancement
Despite the progress made by Scene+, there remain areas for further development.
Programs like American Express Membership Rewards and RBC Avion consistently outperform Scene+ due to their extensive array of transfer partners. Depending on the respective program, points can be transferred to Aeroplan, Flying Blue, Marriott Bonvoy, Hilton Honors, WestJet Rewards, or British Airways Avios, offering much greater flexibility and potential value.
It seems improbable that Scene+ will establish dedicated airline or hotel transfer partnerships; however, cardholders can utilize their points to offset any travel expenses charged to their credit cards. This is significant because booking directly allows travelers to earn loyalty points and retain the benefits associated with hotel or airline statuses, which are usually lost when using third-party booking sites like Expedia.
An additional challenge lies in the fact that Scene+ points do not yield exceptional value. Most redemptions approximate 1 cent per point, and the prior advantage of redeeming for premium movie showings has transitioned to a more uniform cash value. While this may appear minor, loyalty programs require those instances of extra value that make members feel like they are gaining an advantage.
This is particularly critical considering that PC Optimum, a primary competitor, frequently provides up to 50% more value during special redemption events at Shoppers Drug Mart.
Concluding Insights
Despite its shortcomings, Scene+ continues to provide significant everyday value for numerous Canadians. While it may lack the exceptional redemptions offered by some travel or banking programs, one could argue that it has caught up to, and in certain aspects outperformed, PC Optimum in the realm of retail loyalty.
