Secret Locations for Hiding Money
As someone keen on saving, I’ll kick things off with some free options.
1. Inside a tennis ball
When was the last time you searched through a tennis ball canister? You probably wouldn’t think to check there. Make a small slit just large enough to insert and extract bills, then place the ball back among the other tennis balls.
However, if you don’t have other sports equipment around, having just a tennis ball might raise eyebrows.
2. Beneath a dresser drawer
While it may seem a straightforward hiding spot, simply placing cash in the bottom of a drawer could be easily discovered. Instead, try taping an envelope to the bottom of the drawer itself. Most people will overlook this while rifling through your belongings.
3. Within a pen
Surprisingly, you can stow cash in a pen. Roll up a $100 bill and hide it within the pen’s inner workings before reassembling it. Not only does this keep your money concealed, but it also provides you with a fully functional writing instrument. Just be careful not to lend it out!
4. Under your mattress
This classic hiding spot is quite common, which means it’s also a likely first choice for anyone looking for concealed cash. However, it’s still more secure than leaving your money exposed.
5. Fake electrical wall outlet
I had one of these when I was younger, and it was a clever spot to hide cash. Just make sure to select a color that matches your existing outlets to avoid drawing attention.
6. In your shoes
If you’ve got shoes you rarely wear, consider lifting the insoles and stashing cash beneath them. This is a classic yet effective method.
7. Inside an empty food container
Transform an empty Lean Cuisine box into a clever safe in your freezer. While the money might be cold when needed, it will be securely stashed away. Alternatively, use an empty cereal box, but ensure family members don’t dispose of it, thinking it’s trash.
8. In a curtain rod
If your curtain rods have removable ends, you can cleverly stash money there. Simply roll the cash tightly, secure it with a rubber band, and then replace the rod cap.
9. Between couch cushions
This method is convenient since many cushions can be easily opened to stuff a rolled bill inside. A similar technique applies to certain barstool seats!
While using everyday items, you can also purchase objects designed to blend into your surroundings. Below are some noteworthy options.
10. Dr. Pepper stash can
This is another fantastic way to conceal cash, provided you’re a soda drinker. Just ensure it complements your other cans to avoid arousing suspicion.
11. Barbasol can safe
Since many people shave regularly, having a Barbasol can is common and can be an excellent hiding place. Just hope guests don’t attempt to use it and discover it’s empty!
12. Corn can safe
This option provides a clever way to hide money in your pantry. Just be sure to have a backup corn can, should you need to use the actual contents!
12. Pringles can diversion safe
This could be a tricky option because if I had a can of Pringles in my pantry, it would be hard to say, “No, you can’t have those. I’m saving them.” But if your gatherings are minimal, this might work well.
13. Hairbrush stash safe
This functional safe serves as both a hairbrush and a secure hiding spot for cash. It’s one of my favorite ways to conceal money since it provides practicality in addition to secrecy.
14. Dictionary diversion book safe
If you’re inspired by Andy’s in The Shawshank Redemption, you can replicate the concept and hide your funds within a dictionary, offering a similar illusion of secrecy.
15. Wall clock safe
This might be a great option if you rarely need to access your hidden funds. However, if you decide to hang it, retrieving cash might require a ladder, yet it’s unlikely to be discovered.
16. Laundry hamper
Another simple approach is to tape an envelope with cash to the underside of a laundry hamper or tuck it within the liner. Given that nearly everyone has one, this can be a practical choice.
17. DVD case
Despite the abundance of streaming options, you shouldn’t toss out those old DVDs just yet. Use them to hide your cash! Start hiding cash inside DVD cases and position them behind other cases so it appears they’re all part of your collection.
18. Lego structure
This method ranks among my favorites. If you have kids or enjoy Lego, create a structure with a hidden compartment. If not, build a couple of them to illustrate that it’s a hobby of yours.
19. Flashlight
Utilize an old or broken flashlight by removing the batteries and stashing money inside the compartment. Keep the flashlight with your other tools to maintain the illusion of normality. To add weight, consider placing a few small rocks inside.
20. Garage
Garages can serve as excellent hiding spots, as they are often overlooked. Consider concealing your funds in these spots:
- Under a toolbox
- Behind or beneath shelving units
- Under large appliances like a fridge
- In a tackle box
Just remember to keep your garage secured for added safety.
21. Board games
Use board games as another clever hiding spot. Conceal cash between the game components or tape it inside the game’s box for safekeeping.
22. Old coat pocket
Don’t just toss that old coat aside. Instead, hide it in your closet, stashing cash within its pockets or even sewing it into the coat’s lining for extra security.
23. Entertainment center
Make the most of your entertainment center’s nooks and crannies. Tape an envelope with cash or tuck away money in various items like games and players for better concealment.
24. Water bottle
If you’re like me, you have a collection of reusable water bottles. Choose one to serve as a bank, stashing it away at the back of your cupboard for added security.
25. Printer or PC
Consider your printer and PC as potential hiding spots for cash. Tape an envelope of money to the underside of the printer or tuck it inside an old, unused computer.
Conclusion
As demonstrated, numerous options exist for hiding money within your home, including various free methods. Your ideal choice depends on your circumstances.
For instance, if you have young kids, stashing cash in shoes might not be wise since they could easily discover it and misplace it. In my case, a wall clock would be a more practical choice.
